A Beautiful & Functional New Kitchen

Professional Kitchen Installation, Tailored Kitchen Conversions, Wide Range of Kitchen Styles

What are the priorities when redesigning a kitchen? This should get serious consideration as the planning of a home improvement project like this is the most critical stage. A professional eye is needed to avoid mistakes made unwittingly that are just about impossible to rectify later. Think long and hard about what you want the end result to be, search the internet for ideas, and ask everyone you know their opinions. You just might get that one bit of information that saves you a lot of time, money and headaches!

The main function of a kitchen is of course preparation of meals, along with baking, eating together, socialising and doing laundry. Surfaces, appliances and cooking utensils need to be placed so that they are easily accessible and unobtrusive. These requirements come into sharp focus at this time of year, when a large seasonal family meal is perhaps on the menu. You need to be able to move quickly between areas of the room, and grab items without problems or obstructions.

Storage is also high on the list of important aspects of a kitchen redesign, as a neat and ordered environment is extremely desirable and simple to keep nice. A disorganised space means things can go missing or become grubby, and chaos usually ensues. You may need to store food, implements, equipment, pet items and cleaning products.

A bespoke kitchen designed to suit the particular needs of you and your family is a great option, and can include some amazing and innovative modern additions. These include drawers and pantries which roll out smoothly then disappear back into their enclosure. There are many eco friendly choices too, with water and energy saving systems. A new kitchen is a dream to use and dwell in, and if you are in the Essex area, specialists like Premier Build can offer a fully rounded solution whatever your taste. They have many years experience in designing and building, and will project manage the work if preferred.

3 Ideas for Cheap Window Coverings

Handmade Bespoke Kitchen Installation, Slab Doors, Glass Splashbacks, Butchers Block Worktop

Have you ever fancied experimenting with window coverings that are truly individual and maybe a bit quirky? Perhaps you are on a budget, or have moved into your first student flat where you have the freedom to be a little imaginative! Here are some weird and wonderful ideas for window coverings that won’t set you back much at all:-

1. Artistically painted drop cloths

This DIY concept can give great results with a whimsical design on canvas cloth. You can use any image such as those from vintage soap advert posters, or use fabric paint and stencils to personalise. Wash the material first to soften, then measure and stitch a hem if they need shortening. Fit a curtain pole with rings and attach the drapes with alligator clips. These cost pennies and look very effective!

2. Wallpaper covered blind

You can attach a piece of patterned wallpaper to a basic plastic roller blind with wallpaper paste, and cover any bare edges with ribbon trim glued on. Once dried [preferably overnight] roll the blind up and fix to the window, Hey presto!

3. Map window coverings

An unconventional look can be achieved by using old, modern or mythical maps to cover a blind. This time sand the vinyl blind lightly to provide grip, and prime the surface with gesso, before gluing.

These are fun and affordable window covering solutions, but if you desire something a bit more professional, the team at Applewood Interiors offer a free home consultation. This is a perfect way to discover your ideal option for window coverings, whether it’s curtains, blinds or pelmets. You will find every type of window dressing available at Applewood, along with lots of excellent advice. Call them on 01277 200203 for expert advice.

Building on Strengths

Fitted Kitchen & Bathroom Installation, Slab Doors, Glass Splashbacks, Bespoke Kitchen Styles

Two vacant sites in Sandridge and three in Batchwood that were formerly garages are being transformed into affordable housing. The £5.6m scheme is being delivered by St Albans City and District Council, and will provide 48 much needed homes in the form of flats and houses. The garage blocks were demolished a long time ago, and the sites have stood empty since. The homes are due for completion later this year and will assist St Albans in it’s commitment to deliver affordable homes in the area.

St Albans is seeing quite a bit of building of this kind including the recent announcement of a £720,000 grant from Homes England, to redevelop Wavell House in Cell Barnes Lane. This used to be a sheltered accommodation block for elderly residents and has been empty for some time. It is destined to be demolished and replaced by flats and parking spaces for the over 55’s.

Councillor Brian Ellis, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “I am delighted that Homes England has agreed to provide this very substantial grant.” “Wavell House was no longer fit for purpose and we have carefully considered our redevelopment options.” “By developing the block in this way, we are showing our strong commitment to meeting the demand from our community for affordable homes.”

Carol Cairns, Homes England’s Head of Home Ownership and Supply for the South East, said: “This funding is an excellent example of our commitment to increase the supply of affordable homes, helping older people in the St Albans community through the delivery of high quality new homes.”

There are other sheltered housing blocks being redeveloped in St Albans which are becoming unfit for purpose and showing their age. Homes England, has replaced the Homes and Communities Agency, and will work to provide new housing across the UK.

Kitchen splashbacks

Double Glazing & Glazing Replacement, Wigan, Bolton, ManchesterKitchen splashbacks are a perfect example of how kitchen planning and interior design have become connected. Going from a purely practical role – protecting the walls from hob and sink splashes – these days, the kitchen splashback is also more of a statement piece. For a sleek and modern style, glass is an attractive splashback choice.

In addition to worktops, it’s quite often the first element that’s noticed when walking into a kitchen. So, what’s on trend for kitchen splashbacks? Brightly toned toughened glass is very popular and what’s more, almost any bold colour looks stunning from bright and vibrant red to smart and sophisticated navy blue, or maybe give your neutral kitchen a touch of freshness with a lime green sleek glass splashback. Using accessories in matching shades will draw the eye to the splashback, making it work even harder as a star feature of your room too.

Pairing metallics, such as copper or gold, with crisp marble work surfaces is proving popular. Similarly, black and grey stone splashbacks are becoming more prevalent. Maybe opt for a graphic print or photo imaging on a splashback to make an impact. Use it to create a feature wall in a neutral kitchen scheme and it will instantly make your sink area stand out from the rest of your kitchen.

Another idea is to add illumination, use backlighting or down lighting to make the most of texture and fine stone patterns.  If you are using glass ask your glass supplier to add a slim prefabricated frame for LEDs. Opt for lighting that will change from cool white light when you’re cooking to ambient warm tones when you’re dining or relaxing afterwards.

Changing your splashback is an easy way to breathe new life into a kitchen without breaking the bank. So what are you waiting for?

You can find a wide range of kitchen and bathroom splashbacks from companies like G M Glass.

Beautiful and Hard Wearing Floors

Bespoke Kitchen & Bathroom Installation, Slab Doors, Glass Splashbacks, Butchers Block Worktops

Natural stone flooring is favoured for halls and kitchens by many people, and why not, as they are practical, hard wearing and look amazing! Terrazzo has been one of the most popular types of flooring for a long time as it gives a more versatile and interesting edge than materials like ceramic tile. It also has a warmer feel than marble and other similar surfaces, and has been used for thousands of years.

Regarded as an environmentally friendly and sustainable material, terrazzo consists of a mix of recycled glass along with granite, marble and quartz. This is held together by concrete or resin, and once polished, provides the beautiful speckled and glossy finish we all love. High quality terrazzo is also extremely durable and leaves other materials behind here, making this tiling material perfect for areas where there is a lot of foot traffic. Beware of inferior quality versions though which may discolour or become porous and brittle.

As we mentioned this flooring is versatile, being heat and water resistant and simple to cut, meaning it can also be used for splashbacks, kitchen benchtops, bathrooms and even outdoors! There are a wide variety of design and colour options enabling a totally bespoke outcome for your home. Endless possibilities include natural tones, a dynamic monochrome look and striking mosaic styles

This flooring choice will never go out of fashion, and takes very little maintenance, remaining functional and stunning indefinitely. Although the tiles are incredibly long lasting, there can of course be mishaps, where damage is unavoidable. Lawco, are flooring repair specialists with a long history in this field and a reputation for excellence. They can repair every kind of natural flooring including terrazzo, slate, marble, granite, concrete and ceramic. They love a challenge, and have carried out projects like in situ repairs to the highest standard.

Glass Applications for a Creative Designer Impact

Commercial Glazing for Homes, Shops, Schools, Restaurants & Public Buildings, Stockport, Manchester

gmgGlass is an incredibly versatile and attractive addition to the home and is widely utilised by interior designers in order to achieve a striking visual impact. In the past the emphasis on glass within the home, office and shop has tended to centre around the windows of the property, however these days glass is being used in a vast number of exciting ways.

Interior design usually seeks to streamline the living environment, hiding any clutter and disarray, and an emphasis is often placed on gleaming, pristine and reflective surfaces which use light to great effect. It is well known that the clever placing of mirrors and glass will make a small room appear larger and less confined. Many iconic buildings are recognised for their outstanding use of glass, such as the prestigious Apple Store on Fifth Avenue, New York, with its spectacular square glass entrance and exquisite spiral glass staircase. Because of the transparency of the material, items like steps appear to float in mid air, becoming almost sculptural. Glass is extremely strong and different specifications mean it can even be used as flooring for a fascinating dynamic. Glass bathrooms are becoming more popular with the introduction of technology which can change the opacity of the glass with the flick of a switch, so that they look almost completely white, addressing issues of privacy.

Glass is available in a selection of stunning colours and textures and its subtle qualities combine perfectly with materials like wood, metal, concrete and brick. Innovations and developments in the production of glass and its refining processes have enabled a limitless array of additional possibilities. Constant improvements allow highly practical and functional solutions, as modern glass products are also manufactured with safety as well as thermal and acoustic insulation in mind.

Our web promotion partners Greater Manchester Glass offer a comprehensive range of glass and glazing choices for domestic or commercial customers. You can own decorative kitchen worktops and splash-backs, kitchen tops and breakfast bars, with 30 beautiful colour options. Dazzling bathrooms can be created with made to measure shower screens, mirrors, glass partitions, curtains and room dividers. Elegant glass balustrades and balconies in tinted shades will enhance any business, office, shop or restaurant, and fire resistant safety glass from Greater Manchester glass adorn many schools and public buildings.

Self Build, is growing in popularity at an incredible rate, due partly to encouraging government measures and funding. The government has made available a sum of £44million to fund self build projects. People wishing to build their own home are also now exempt from paying the Community Infrastructure Levy [CIL], a charge which proved a significant deterrent to self builders. These changes have been put in place with the hope of bringing the UK up to speed with its European neighbours. For instance Austria has approximately 80% of self built homes, while in Germany and Belgium 50% of homes are occupied by self builders. Many people are now realising that self build is possible and not exclusively for the privileged few.

Build Your Own Dream Home

Concept to Completion Multi Building Services Offering New Build Project Management, Essex

kc blog

When planning a home move, the usual first step taken is to look around for a property which has as many positive elements as possible. The new house has to be in an acceptable and convenient area, be the right size, in a suitable state of repair, have some form of garden perhaps. You will probably have to make a number of compromises, you may think its perfect but there is no garden space, one of the bedrooms is tiny, its next to a motorway or a sewage farm. [Maybe the last one is a little extreme].

Even when all of its features seem ideal, you could still stand in the middle of this dream home and just not like the ‘feel’ of the place. Disappointing. So when considering a move which is one of the biggest life events you can experience both joyful and stressful, there are limited choices.

But….imagine being able to find a location you like, choose a plot that suits you, decide the size, shape and specification of property you would prefer, along with details like how much garden etc. Once all of the preliminaries are sorted, you can watch your custom home appear before your eyes. The idea of self build homes is something which is now being actively encouraged by the government, who have allocated funds towards this practice in the form of a £65m Affordable Homes Guarantee Programme. They have also recently announced that all self and custom build projects will be exempt from the Community Infrastructure Levy and section 106 tariffs. Government are hoping that these actions will dispel the misconception that self build is a privilege of the rich, and that good quality affordable housing can be accessed by many people in this way. These moves are a big deal and will spur on many people who have been put off by the perceived costs. There is even lots of advice available on taking out a mortgage for your self build.

Of course another contributing factor to placing their self build dream under the ‘maybe one day’ heading, is the thought of ‘who can I get to do the work?’ The services of a number of specialists and experts are required including qualified architects, designers, builders, plumbers, certified gas and water fitters, glaziers, landscapers, the list is endless. The good news is that companies such as Multi Building Services Ltd, based in Chelmsford, Essex, offer a comprehensive wrap around service, meaning you can find every service under one roof. They will discuss, advise and even project manage your self build from A-Z, and can provide an experienced and skilled team for every task This means a hassle free solution to your self build project, and more time to yourself.

Clever Kitchen Storage

Comprehensive Range of Bespoke Kitchen Styles, Contemporary, Classic, Traditional & Rustic, Wigan

reflections_mocha_1

No matter how little or how much you use your kitchen, you could probably do with more storage space! Take a look around your kitchen, notice any areas of clutter and ask yourself ‘do those items really need to be on show?’ Bits and pieces like salt and pepper pots, vitamin bottles, less frequently used utensils and things waiting to go in the recycle, not only make a kitchen appear untidy and take up valuable space, but can gather dust and grime. The kitchen is an environment that should be kept clean and unable to harbour any nasties or bacteria. Chances are these articles could have their own small niche, where they are out of the way.

Corner units

Many fitted kitchen styles are designed to make clever use of corners with modern corner drawers or nifty wire baskets which slide in and out as the doors are opened. This utilises the often ignored space at the back of the cupboard.

Pull out storage

Pull out units are ideal for organising and storing a multitude of items including herbs and spices, bottles and jars kitchen utensils and chopping boards. These space saving storage solutions are perfect for streamlining your kitchen, as they come in a wide range of sizes, even from the floor to the top of your cupboards. They can be gently rolled back to sit flush with the other units, presenting an unobtrusive profile.

Interior mini shelves

If you have a large cupboard and would like to store more small items inside, you can add a set of mini shelves. This allows part of your cupboard to store things vertically, maximising accessibility.

Recycle drawer

We are all encouraged to recycle as much as possible so it makes sense to have a drawer with plastic compartments or boxes where separated recycle bottles and cans can sit until they are transferred to the outside recycle bins.

Back of the door

Racks for the back of doors are handy and quite inexpensive, with hooks which fit over the top of the door and several shelves. These will free up a lot of kitchen storage space and provide your kitchen with a tidy and organised appearance.

These are just a few ideas to make life simpler and enhance your kitchen experience. If you really want to turn time spent in the kitchen into a positive pleasure you should consider a purpose built kitchen from the experts. Kitchen Class, Wigan, will hand build your dream kitchen incorporating any space saving touches you wish. You will be amazed at the stunning range of bespoke kitchens on offer, in a myriad of styles from ultra contemporary like the Reflections Mocha, to rustic cottage like the Dakota.
