Coal Mining History of Orrell & Shevington

Originally a mining village, Orrell near Wigan, was renowned for the superior quality of its coal. Laterly, Orrell's proximity to the M6 and M58 contribute to it being a dormitory town with ease of access to places like Manchester and Liverpool. The Liverpool to Manchester railway line which passes through Orrell has also contributed to its popularity as an area open to new residential development.

'Orrell Mount' in the 1700's housed an establishment of French Benedictine nuns, under Madame Louise de Levis Mireoix, of Montargis, in France. They sought refuge from the French revolution and landed in Brighton in 1792, before residing in Yorkshire, then finally Orrell. The nuns were greatly respected by all due to their commitment to educating the young, and their kindness, grace and dignity.

Shevington in the borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester was also a coal mining community. Coal was transported across the north west from Shevington via the Leeds Liverpool canal. Today, like most towns of this kind, Shevington has an active list of community events such as fetes and sports groups. Shevington has an amateur football club and a well established rugby league club, Shevington Sharks.

Worsley Historic Buildings & Open Spaces

Worsley village in Salford, is a designated conservation area, due to an interesting collection of historic listed buildings. Worsley is known for its unique character containing along side its important structures, landscapes with mature trees, canal basins and open spaces. Like most of the locations in this neck of the woods, Worsley played its part in the coal mining industry, and coal was transported from here to Manchester via the Bridgewater Canal.

18th century cottages and 19th century houses abound in Worsley, some displaying the charm of black and white vernacular style. Worsley Green is an area of open public space proudly showing off a Victorian ornamental fountain. Buildings of historic interest here, include Bridgwater Estate offices, Rock House, The Nailmaker's House, Court House, Packet House, and the former police station [The Old Nick].
